From the Vault.  Today’s Classic Bass Line is from “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel.  This tune is from his highly successful album So.  Peter Gabriel’s website is here.  The highly talented and prolific bassist Tony Levin played this iconic bass line.  Look for a Know Your Player on Tony Levin in the future.

Levin played this track on his fretless Music Man Stingray through an octave pedal.  Add a little compression in front of the octave pedal, and play with a pick.  You need to mix the dry and the octave effect to create an almost synth-like sound.  (For my post on the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, click here.)

Below is the original track, a bass cover, and a live “bass cam” video from Tony’s bass – a cool point of view.  Accurate TABS are here.  Learn it!
