“What A Fool Believes” by The Doobie Brothers

It makes sense that one of them is named "Skunk".

“Where’s the drum circle?”

Today’s Classic Bass Line is from “What A Fool Believes” by The Doobie Brothers.  I’ve always admired this line, but I never got around to learning it until this morning.  No one has ever called it on a gig, and for good reason.  It’s an elusive line.  (No wonder Rerun tried to bootleg the show.  He wanted to slow down the tape to learn this line.)

The verse and pre-chorus are in Db Major/Bb Minor.  Coming out of the pre-chorus into the chorus there is a suprising pivot from a Gmin7(b5) to a F#min – B7 (ii-V) which swings the chorus into E major.  That’s Chromatic Mediant Modulation in a pop song.  You heard me.  “Doobie Brothers” indeed.

Accurate TABS are here.
