“Give It Away” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Flea3

It’s me, Flea.

Today let’s look at a Classic Bass Line from Flea of The Red Hot Chili Peppers .  His lines are complex and intricate, and his playing style is an aggressive mix of hard punk fingerstyle and funkadelic slap.  Today I thought we’d start with one of his easier lines so we can get a feel for his style.  “Give It Away” is off the highly successful album Blood Sugar Sex Magik that was released in 1991.  Look for an in-depth Know Your Player post on Flea in the future.  For info on The Red Hot Chili Peppers click here.  For more info on Flea click here.

After digging around, it appears that he played this bass line on a Wal Mach II bass.  For the Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour he played different MusicMan basses,  and shortly thereafter he switched to Modulus basses.  Below is the original song, the isolated bass track, a good cover with TABS, and a comprehensive look at the line from Dmanlamius76.  Check it out.
